Chapter Six

Raine did another circuit of the bottom level windows again. Along with checking and rechecking the door, the alarm, and that all the external lights were on. For the fifth time. In the last thirty minutes. Even though she knew everything was fine.

It was a habit she thought she’d gotten over. Finally.

Now she knew why Roarke always came over, checking her security. She’d feel guilty if she wasn’t still so furious with him because she’d given him so much grief over it, thinking he was taking the over-protective-big-brother-thing way too far. God, how she wished that’s all it’d been.

After having the glass replaced in the broken window, everything looked in place, back to normal. Roarke had even patched the drywall. She could almost imagine the whole thing last night hadn’t happened. Except for the fact that she had a sexy, moody new roommate who’d been holed up in her guest room since he’d gotten back and taken over the “night shift” from Roarke.

Jake’s presence should have been comforting, but having him in the house might be worse. All she had to do was go in there and she could have the pleasure he offered, all of it, every last exquisite bit of it. It didn’t help that she only had to close her eyes to know exactly how his hot breath had felt against her thighs, how his tongue had felt between her legs.

Jake’s door was open when she went upstairs, the hot, damp air from the bathroom letting her know he’d just had a shower. And God, he was laying on the bed, shirtless, propped up with a bunch of pillows behind him, all smooth expanses of warm skin and hard, bulging muscles.

“Hey.” He gave her a quick glance before looking back down at the laptop he had open on his thighs, his brows a dark slash over his eyes.

She frowned and wrapped her arms around herself. There was a faint breeze wafting into the room. He had the window open. She never did that, had forgotten what it was like to feel the cool night air this time of year.

“Cold?”

He hadn’t looked up that time. It was unnerving the way he could do that, see without looking.

“No.” She dropped her hands and walked in. “What are you doing?”

Now he gave her a deep, long look. “Researching stalker mentality.”

Oh. Right. Great. She’d spent considerable time on that herself. It’d helped to know she hadn’t been alone in what she was going through, although she’d been surprised and disheartened at all the cases she’d found. And scared. Yeah, she’d been scared most of all.

She thrust her hands into the pockets of her robe. “And?”

He looked back at his screen and frowned. “You’d have to be a fucking asshole to do this to a woman.”

Raine let out a soft breath. “You—you didn’t tell me what happened with Steve.”

She’d worried when he told her he was going to approach Steve. Worried and agonized over it. Raine knew firsthand how persuasive Steve could be.
